But today you can’t do that because you need to learn about Roman rulers. They were a mixed lot. Here are just a few…
-
There was Julius Caesar, who was one of the most successful generals in history but who enraged so many senators that they stabbed him.
-
There was Augustus, who always referred to himself as “First Citizen” to hide the fact that he was really an all-powerful Emperor.
-
Tiberius came next.
-
Then there was Caligula. He was noted for making his horse a consul and for other strange and more dangerous excesses. Find out what his name meant.
-
While most of his family thought Claudius a stuttering fool he was actually an intelligent man who did some worthwhile things for Rome BUT he had doubtful taste in women. One of his wives probably poisoned him.
-
And then there was Nero, whose mother had probably murdered Claudius to bring her son to power. Eventually, despite her actions on his behalf, he ordered her to be killed and the story goes that she told the soldiers who were about to kill her to stab her below the stomach: “Strike here, for this bore Nero”.

Gruesome stories, aren’t they?
